ブリストルでの最高な日々 〜Wonderful days in Bristol〜 (13 Oct 2014 ? 19 Dec 2014)
名古屋大学の環境学研究科には毎年イギリスのブリストル大学へ学生を派遣する交換留学制度があります。その一環として、2014年春に交換留学生としてブリストル大学のクレアとジェームス（上写真）が私の所属講座で３か月間滞在することになりました。そして彼らと短い間でしたが、同じ研究室のメンバーとして仲良くなり、「次は私がそっちに行くね！」と約束をして、その年の交換留学生に申し込むことを決めました。当時私は学部4年生だったので、「英語で研究…?」「海外で一人で生活…?」等々、不安要素は数え切れないほどありましたが、それ以上に「次いつあるか分からない機会を逃したくない!!」という気持ちが強く、迷いはありませんでした。そして、幸運にも交換留学生として選出されて、その年の秋に私がブリストル大学で地球科学講座の一員として約2か月半滞在することになりました。
Nagoya University has the exchange study program with University of Bristol
in U.K. In 2014 spring, Clare and James (upper picture), who were selected
as exchange students, stayed in our laboratory for approximately three
months. We make friends with each other soon. Then, I made them a promise
that I would go to Bristol as an exchange student next, and decided to
apply for the program. At that time, I was a fourth year undergraduate
student and had just started researching, so uncountable worries ran through
my mind like “Researching in English…?” “Living abroad alone…?” However,
because I strongly felt that I don’t want to miss this chance, I didn’t
hesitate to apply for the program at all. Fortunately, I was selected as
an exchange student in 2014 fall, and I had become a member of School of
Earth Sciences in University of Bristol from 13 Oct to 19 Dec.
ブリストル大学ではNick先生（上写真）の下で「エウロパにおける隕石衝突を使った地震探査の可能性」という題目の研究を行いました。Nick先生は私の急な滞在の申し出にも快く応じていただき、非常に丁寧な指導を受けることができました。その指導のおかげで、短い滞在でしたが良い結果を出すことができ、学会でも発表することができました。現在もNick先生と交流が続いており、共著で論文の執筆を行っています。Nick先生には本当に多くのことを教わり、今後の研究活動への大きな示唆と刺激を得ることができました。本当にあっという間に終わった海外留学でしたが、現地でたくさんの友達ができて様々な異文化交流をすることができました。そしてクレアとジェームスとも再会し、クレアの両親には観光案内までしてもらったのは良い思い出です。またイギリスはもちろんヨーロッパ各地もお手頃価格でめぐることができて観光面でも非常に満足できました笑（下写真．イタリアのスペイン広場にて撮影）。私自身、今回の経験を活かして近い将来、より積極的に海外で研究活動をしたいと強く感じるようになりました。そして、この記事を見て一人でも環境学研究科の交換留学制度に興味を持つ人が出れば幸いです。
In University of Bristol, I studied under Dr. Nick (upper photo). The
research topic is “Seismic detectability of meteorite impacts on Europa”.
Dr. Nick supervised me very kindly there. Thanks to his support I got a
very good result, and have presented those findings in some scientific
conferences. We still keep in touch with each other now by emails and continue
the joint work. In this stay, I have learned a lot from Dr. Nick, and got
many suggestions for future studies. Although the length of the stay was
very short, I made many friends there and visited various European countries
besides the U.K. (see lower picture taken at Piazza di Spagna in Italy)
Also, it is the great memory for me to have seen Clare and James again,
and Clare’s family took me sightseeing around her hometown!! In the near
future, I would really like to stay and study and enjoy abroad again!!
It would be great for me if someone could get interested in the exchange
study program in Nagoya University by reading this article.
